⏱️Being productive and healthy cognitive_bias memory

This effect, called the Zeigarnik effect has a positive and a negative side. The positive is that we can use it to keep something on our minds. The negative is that we can only have so many things in our minds before it just becomes too stressful.

This also explains why ticking things of a list feel so good. It is literally something of our minds. Getting Things Done - David Allen

How to make use of this effect:

  • have a good system in place where you can park ideas / tasks, they will be of your mind → reduces stress
  • start something, even if you don’t know what to do next, it will stay on your mind. Even in the background your mind might come up with something (just like Mendeleev)

Fleeting notes

  • The effect was first observed by Russian psychologist Bluma Zeigarnik, who noticed that waiters in a café could recall the orders they had not yet delivered better than those they had distributed.
  • Much research supports the Zeigarnik effect, but it can also be undermined by things like the timing of task interruption, one’s motivation to engage in a task, and how difficult one believes a task is.
  • Knowledge of the Zeigarnik effect can help overcome procrastination, improve study habits, and promote mental health.
  • When a task is interrupted it will stay on your mind. This can help to creatively and productively think through problem. Sleep on it.
