Human behavior as automatons

Because ‘to know about something’ isn’t the same as ‘knowing something’ — Christian, The Collector’s Fallacy

collectors fallacy: The tendency to gather useful stuff, and feel good about it. It’s a fallacy (the use of invalid or otherwise faulty reasoning) because it gives the mistaken idea of an increase in knowledge and understanding

  • It makes us feel good → addictive
  • collecting is not learning
  • understanding → how does this piece of information relate to other information in my graph → linking
  • truly understanding something means you can explain it to others who are not proficient in that field
