Many great thinkers throughout history—from Einstein to Darwin to Newton—attributed their breakthroughs not to active logical analysis, but to periods of contemplation, daydreaming, or meditative states where their minds were free to make unexpected connections.

In a PKM all information is known, still, by using the graph view, tags, keywords and other forms of searches, one can link previously unrelated notes together. This kind of linking results in more creative writing, and helps adjust thinking in new directions. insights or originality occurs at the juncture of two before unrelated concepts
Too strict organisation reduces (the possibility of) serendipity rigid planning leads to short term success & innovation needs space and not too much order

“You’ll see I wear only gray or blue suits,” he said. “I’m trying to pare down decisions. I don’t want to make decisions about what I’m eating or wearing. Because I have too many other decisions to make.” research that shows the simple act of making decisions degrades one’s ability to make further decisions. It’s why shopping is so exhausting. “You need to focus your decision-making energy. You need to routinize yourself. You can’t be going through the day distracted by trivia.” You don’t have those moments of serendipity. You don’t bump into a friend in a restaurant you haven’t seen in years. The loss of anonymity and the loss of surprise is an unnatural state. Michael Lewis- Obama’s Way - Vanity Fair
If you do go all the way, concentrate on writing out just two short solid ideas every day (Luhmann averaged about 6 per day and Roland Barthes averaged 1 and change). Do it until you have between 500 and 1000 cards (based on some surveys and anecdotal evidence), and you should begin seeing some serendipitous and intriguing results as you use your system for your writing. –Reframing and simplifying the idea of how to keep a Zettelkasten - Chris Aldrich
